having had a fascination for the built environment at the early age of 10, there has been an analogy that i have continually asked myself and others.

doctors and nurses :: sick people as architects and urban planners:  ?

a.) poorly developed areas

b.) the built environment

c.) the homeless

d.) all of the above

e.) none of the above

as a kid, the initial answer to this analogy was c.) the homeless. being empathic toward those in third world countries living in dire conditions, primarily because my family is from nigeria, i was outraged that there wasn’t a noticeable presence of architects and urban planners in developing countries.  this was one of the factors that lead to my interest in studying architecture in college.  during the first couple of years of my undergraduate studies in architecture, it seemed like most professors wanted the answer to the analogy question be b.) the built environment.  even though my professors added an extensive amount of knowledge to what i thought i knew about architecture, the portrayed idolization of the built world, which i felt wasn’t as important as the people living in that world, kept my views open to the roles architects and planners had on society. recently though, the experiences of having visited nigeria two times in the past decade, researching urban conditions in a variety of cities through multiple seminars and classes, and my gradate studies in architecture and city & urban planning, the answer to that analogy question has evolved into a.) poorly developed areas.  in a way, this answer is a combination of the two previous answers that i had for my analogy question which were the homeless and the built environment.
